Winter in the northwest

The warm weather has left and the days are short, wet and brisk but that won’t keep a true northwesterner inside all winter! There is still much to be done in our yards to ensure they live through the winter so we can enjoy them again next spring and summer!

There is still time to plant the spring budding bulbs- in fact we have them on sale 20% off right now. You can plant them right up until frost (hopefully we have a little more time!)

Many of your plants are dormant now, they’ve earned their rest and it is the perfect time to prune them. This allows them to not expend all their energy during the winter and gives them the ability to flourish next spring.

You will also want to continue cleaning up debris and raking up leaves. Leaving them in wet piles creates a very hospitable environment for diseases and mildew- not what your yard needs! If you thought you might leave them so that they create a blanket of warmth for your plants, try mulching instead. Mulch is a great blanket for your plant beds as it keeps nutrients in the soil rather than running right through, and insulates your plants against the winter elements.

Another thing to note this year in particular, is that we have had some unusual weather, notably the heat this summer. That had a dramatic impact on tree growers in our state, so buying your Holiday tree this year is going to be a little different. Many growers were able to provide trees that look beautiful on 3 sides but perhaps that 4th side has a little extra character. These trees are also going to require more watering than you may be used to and will likely shed more needles than trees of the past. Some growers are recommending that you leave your tree outside as long as possible but with proper care and attention you and your family should be able to enjoy your tree for the entire season!

Have a happy and healthy Holiday Season! We look forward to seeing you in the store this season!
